Testimony

Nicolas Dautricourt – Stradivari 1713

Retracing the course of the Stradivarius “Château Fombrauge”  which I have the privilege of using, is unfortunately impossible.

Manufactured in 1713 in the workshop of its Master in Cremona, in Northern Italy, having then in all likelihood crisscrossed Europe according to what its various owners had been able to impose on it and finally, put to rest for a rather long period in a London lutherie workshop before becoming the property of Mr. Magrez in 2010, it would certainly not be illegitimate to interpret this last stage as the starting point of a second life, a rebirth, in a way.

A physical rebirth, and a second artistic wind as well, because what could be more tragic for a musical instrument than to find itself orphaned, as it was the case for so many years?

If I stick strictly to my personal experience with this instrument, our meeting took place in December 2013, thanks to the initiative of Mr. Magrez, who was at that time looking for a violinist who " would accept” to continue his career on his Stradivarius!

I insist on the formula, because it made me jump!

Would you have to be crazy enough to decline such an invitation, I thought to myself at the time, as if the answer was not obvious!

I of course answered that I was transported to the idea of such a prospect, we then met, Mr Magrez, Mrs Daquin and myself, in the presence of the person concerned with the four strings, and at the At the end of this interview, I was told that I was the lucky one.

As time passed, I often thought about this turn of phrase, which had amused me when reading the letter, the idea that we are looking for a violinist who would "accept" to play a Stradivarius... almost the height of self, when you think about it!

In reality, much more than a rhetorical turn, it was a turn of mind that had to be seen there.

Because what makes possible this wonderful adventure that I have been living since that moment alongside Mr. Magrez and his team, an adventure that I would describe as almost human before being artistic, which makes it not only possible but at the same time full of joy and promise, it is the exceptional altruism of which the artistic patronage of Mr. Magrez bears the seal, a rare altruism, coupled with extreme humility.

And it is precisely this nuance with which this first approach was subtly tinted; it had at the time attracted my curiosity, since then it has taken on its full meaning.
